Barren Ground Grizzly - Nunavut
Every year a few select hunters are lucky enough to shoot for one of the world’s most sought after predators – the barren ground grizzly. On the vast tundra of Nunavut, the grizzly population continues to thrive and expand its territory. Our spring hunts have been 100% successful, though trophy bears are not always located.
Hunting during this season is done via snow machine, which enables you to cover far more ground than possible in fall conditions, and provides a huge advantage when looking for these highly mobile animals. Unseasonably warm or cold weather or other conditions beyond our control may affect your hunt. If there’s a change in the route the caribou take, or a blizzard, your hunt may not be exactly as described. Your transportation is a large wooden sled pulled by your guide. In the past, comfort on these sleds has not been the best. We are experimenting with a shock absorption system.
In size, the barren ground grizzly compares well to the mountain grizzly of Yukon or Alaska. It is not as big as the lowland grizzly that is found along the salmon rivers of British Columbia or Alaska. Exceptional specimens of barren ground grizzly may reach eight or nine feet. At any size, this bear is well known for its ferocity. And fears no animal – man included.

Grizzly Bear Hunting in British Columbia
These impressive animals can be found throughout both our northern and southern territories in good numbers. We target large boars in the 6 ½’ to 8’ range with skulls sometimes reaching 24” or better. Colour varies from blond, to brown with silver tips, to almost black.
In the fall we hunt them in our northern territory as a single species, or as an ad on to your moose or caribou hunt. These bears are on a strict quota with a maximum of 3 being harvested each year so the pressure on them is very light. Bears are often found feeding heavily on berries or digging for roots in the higher country as they put on weight before the long winters hibernation. Their amazing noses and keen ears make them a formidable adversary and it’s always exciting getting in close to these top predators. These hunts are 10 days in duration and are conducted 1 on 1. Success rates vary year to year, but for the determined hunter there is a good chance of putting one of these bears on the ground. Accommodations during your hunt will be remote cabins that give us excellent access to where these big bears live.
In the spring we hunt these beautiful trophies as they emerge from their dens in our southern Peace Country territory. At this time of the year the bears are trying to regain weight lost over the winter and are actively feeding on new grasses along the many oilfield and logging roads. They also can be found in the many logged over cut blocks as the sun hits these south facing slopes first. This is also the time of the year when their coats are fullest, and their claws are long. Our bear quota for this area is only 1 per season so these bears see almost zero hunting pressure what so ever. These hunts are 10 days in duration and are conducted 1 on 1. There is also a black bear trophy fee included in the base price for this hunt as they are found in excellent numbers throughout this area. Accommodations for this hunt are a comfortable wall tent camp with showers available. This hunt is not overly strenuous and can be completed by almost anybody.
