Mt. Nyala concessions have produced magnificent Mt. Nyala quality and consistency. Taking three Mt. Nyala bulls in the SCI Top 10 in the last three seasons, this outfitter’s records speak for themselves. They have never taken a bull under 33", and their average is 37" with a very high success rate.
Since the new development of his “Sorroro” concession, they have been 100% successful in this area on Mt. Nyala bulls all going 38" plus, with the largest going 40".
The “Shadem” concession has consistently produced Mt. Nyala between 36-38". Bulls of 40" plus are spotted every season, however distance and vegetation can sometimes make it difficult to connect.
Areas are limited to two or three Mt. Nyala bulls per concession per season. This allows them to be extremely selective on the quality of Mt. Nyala chosen.
There are two predominant mountain ranges for Mt. Nyala in Ethiopia – the Ahmar Mountains situated in the eastern part of the country and the Bale Mountains in the southeast. The highly regarded Bale Mountains National Park is great habitat for Mt. Nyala, but unfortunately the surrounding concessions have been dominated by overhunting, reducing consistent quality, and human encroachment. This has only influenced poaching and pushes the animals back into the park.
However, the Ahmar mountain range does not have this problem. They are protected areas, managed completely by the concession holders. Fortunately, these concessions are also in Muslim areas, which helps keep poaching to a minimum as none of the locals eat wild game.
SEASON AND TIME OF YEAR The 12-month Ethiopian hunting season does not follow the standard calendar year, but runs from August 1st to July 31st of the following year. However, of this year, only 60% is conducive to having a successful Mt. Nyala hunt. The best time to plan your Mt. Nyala safari is early October through June. Ethiopia’s rainy season settles in early July through September, making hunting difficult, especially in the highland areas.
SPECIES AND AREA With all of Ethiopia’s different species, with many of them being endemic to Ethiopia, these safaris are very exclusive and highly sought after by hunters around the world. Hunting areas in Ethiopia are so diverse that we have categorized them by either Highland or Lowland species. Highland species are hunted in the Ahmar mountain range and include Mountain species, such as Mountain Nyala, Leopard, Menelick’s Bushbuck, Bushpig, and Colobus Monkey.
Lowland species hunts are conducted in the Danikal and include Sommering’s Gazelle, Besia Oryx, Lesser Kudu, Salt’s DikDik, Abyssinian Bushbuck, Abyssinian Greater Kudu, Northern Gerenuk, Deffasa Waterbuck, and a range of Baboons. Nile Buffalo are hunted in the western part of the country, in more savanna woodland country. Other species, like E.A Defassa Waterbuck and Bushbuck, are found there.
WEATHER AND CLIMATE Depending on the type of safari you have chosen, you can expect weather conditions to be as follows: Highland – Because of the high altitudes the climate tends to be cooler, sometimes foggy, and wet with occasional light rains, even though it’s outside the main rainy season. Here temperatures range from 40 degrees at dawn and night up to 70 degrees during the day. Lowland – Here the climate is steadier. With desert type conditions, temperatures can drop significantly in the late evening and reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit midday. However, most hunting is done between 50-90 degrees Fahrenheit.
