Mexico - Yucatan
Fishing Adventure #17
As a young and broke fly fishing guide I too had a bucket list, at the top of my list was catching a bonefish, actually a permit, bonefish and a Tarpon, ok, really anything that swam in the ocean and would eat a fly. After a couple of years and a lot of pre internet research I found myself and a couple of other adventurous fishing guides staying at a dive lodge in the remote Yucatan village of Xcalak Mexico. Somehow we ended up with a South African “ outfitter” and local guide Victor Castro, now a Captain, Victor has been guiding fly anglers since the early 90’s, along with mastering the english language, Victor has become not only a good friend but an expert flats guide, mastering the waters in Chetumal Bay Mexico.
Located on the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula just north of the Belize border and a short boat ride into Chetumal Bay, Xcalak is the perfect place for the well traveled or first time flats angler toexperience large numbers of uneducated bonefish as well as a good number of permit. Sight casting to big barracuda or blind casting to baby tarpon and snook are also on the menu. Victor along with his son Victor Jr. are the very best guides I know of to make an introduction into the world of Caribbean flats fishing.
While Victor does not offer lodging, there is a variety of places to stay in Xcalak and the larger town of Mahaul, just 45 minutes north. To our GHR clients we do offer a spectacular rental house on a private beach near Mahahual. The house is fully appointed, newly constructed and can accommodate a group of 12. As with all of the fishing adventures we offer, I would be happy to put a fishing/lodging package together or host the trip and will help with flies and gear recommendations. Staying in Mahahaul and fishing with Victor and his crew is the very best "economy” flats trip I have found.
