I began guiding in the in the great wilderness of Wyoming back in 2006. I rode a horse I had raised from a colt who had traveled west with me a few years prior. The 29 mile ride into camp took about 8 to 9 hours depending on your dudes and your gear all staying put. The Wyoming Thorofare gave way to migrating elk herds, grizzly and wolves. For ten weeks I rode the countryside, climbing steep mountain ridges, glassing into the wind and setting up my hunters for the shot. Through the sun, the rain and the snow I took ten bull elk out of that country that year.
The following season I was offered a job by Outfitter Dave Seagall of the K-Z in the Absaroka Wilderness. The country there was even steeper. I pulled long strings of mules and horses some 14 miles into the wilderness to reach the base of camp. Herds of elk camouflaged by the burnt timber scattered the mountainsides. There were a lot nicer bulls in this area and I took 6 elk out of camp that year scoring up into the 380’s.
Hunting had become my passion. That same season I went to work for Thomas Baker of Buro Crazy Outfitters in Sonora Mexico guiding mule deer and coues deer hunts. I was invited back the following season to guide and the season after that I took over managing the business altogether. We set up a feeding program on the ranches, did predator control and really worked hard to manage what we took off the ranches for the long term trophy quality. We took several 200 inch bucks from the ranches over the eight years I was involved with the best bucks scoring upwards of 246.
When I wasn’t in Mexico I spent the majority of my time in the mountains of Wyoming, mostly Region H and Region G and the Henry Mountains and Paunsaugunt of Utah with a few trips to ride the country of Colorado and the Arizona Strip. I did a lot of scouting. I worked together in the States with friends and family and a lot of Auction and Governor Tag Hunters. I intimately came to know the land and the wildlife in it with a profound sense of connection. We were looking for the best of the best and when I did my homework that always paid off.
I also spent a great deal of time in Alaska hunting dall sheep and New Zealand hunting red stag. My passion and appreciation for hunting will never leave me.
